Our Congregation

Welcome to Temple Israel of Dover. We are a vibrant congregation of individuals and families old and young, traditional and not so traditional, who are drawn to Judaism for a variety of reasons - spiritual, tradition, community. We are members of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ).

A Reform synagogue, we welcome all as family. Rabbi Larry Karol, who has served Temple Israel since August of 2006, and the Temple Board of Trustees and committee chairs and members are committed to working together to engender a sense of warmth and camaraderie for all who join us for worship and other gatherings. We extend our care beyond the Temple building through a weekly “Torah cybercommentary” and update and through offering support to the greater Seacoast community in many ways.

The Temple’s spiritual and community life is teeming with activities including:

  • Regular Friday night services including monthly Family Service at 7:30 pm preceded by pot luck, vegetarian/dairy communal dinner. The dinner is preceded by a Tot Shabbat for young children at 6 p.m. There is also a “Shabbat Service for Renewal of Spirit” once a month that includes music and readings along with Shabbat prayers that focus on healing and wholeness, and the “More Than Words: A Spiritual Lexicon” D’var Torah series on selected Friday nights.
  • Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur observances (including a break-the-fast meal)
  • Sukkah decorating and Sukkot family service
  • Simchat Torah celebration
  • Hanukkah songfest, program and latke party
  • Tu Bish’vat Seder
  • Purim Megillah reading and carnival
  • Community Passover Seder
  • Youth group
  • Adult Hebrew lessons
  • Cultural and social activities
  • Sisterhood and Hadassah
  • Tefillah and Torah monthly Shabbat morning service including Torah study and followed by Bagel Brunch
  • An active and welcoming Religious School for children beginning in Pre-K through Bnei Mitzvah, plus the “Eitz Chayim/Tree of Life” Confirmation sessions with the rabbi for 8th graders and high school students.

It is Temple Israel’s desire to be a spiritual and community home for anyone who connects or wishes to connect with Jewish beliefs and traditions in a warm, welcoming and respectful community.
